Dry Eye is probably the most commonly used term to describe a condition that affects millions of individuals. Rather than think of Dry Eye as merely a dryness of the eye’s outer surface, it might be more accurate to think of this entity as a lack of quantity and quality of a special coating of the external eye called the Tear Film.

The Tear Film is very complex and much more than simply a layer of moisture. It is actually composed of three layers which contain some 70 proteins, 100 lipids, sugar, vitamins, enzymes, water and numerous other elements and compounds. These ingredients all help to nourish and protect the cornea and the external structures of the eye. If the Tear Film is inadequate, symptoms may vary from minor to severe and at times even be incapacitating. MORE>
